... by preachers of a bygone day
It is of immense importance to have the ANSWER from GOD, for those who are convinced that SIN is man's greatest problem. To publish the news that God in his grace has not only provided salvation but wants us to BELIEVE it, is the prime objective of any true servant of God.
If you have never been shown in the past, your need of a pardon let me now point you to the word of God- Romans 3; 10- There is none righteous, no, not one. And Romans 3:23- For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God— That shows us our need of salvation.
However God does not leave us there, He lets us know through the apostle Paul in Romans5:8. " But God commendeth His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." It would surely be the greatest tragedy for anyone to ignore the wonderful goodness of our Creator in giving His only SON to SAVE us.
It might be surprising to you that the bible is full of this news—it is commonly known as 'the Gospel'. However, it needs to be spread abroad for everyone to hear. And indeed the Lord Himself gave the preachers this authority when He told the disciples " Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature." Mark 15;16.
I was deeply impressed by the way some preachers of earlier days presented this wonderful message, e.g. in his book 'The All Sufficiency of Chnst', C. H. Mackintosh wntes, "a conscience on which the light of Divine truth has poured itself in convicting power, feels and owns that sin can never enter into the presence of God; that sin, wherever it is found, can only be met by the just judgment of a sin - hating God. Hence, until the Divine method of dealing with sin is understood and believed, there must be intense anxiety. - Sin is a reality .- God's holiness is a reality - conscience is a reality - judgment to come is a reality. All these things must be looked at and duly considered. Justice must be satisfied ~ conscience purged - Satan silenced. How is all this to be done? Only by the CROSS of CHRIST. Here, then, we have the solid ground of Divine forgiveness-- the PRECIOUS ATONEMENT of CHRIST.
GOD poured out His righteous wrath upon sin, in order that He might pour the everlasting beams of HIS favour upon the believing sinner. GOD has been satisfied as to sin. Here the troubled conscience finds sweet repose. Our sins were like huge dark mountains before us, threatening us with eternal wrath; but the BLOOD of JESUS has blotted them all out from God's view. We are FREE.— That is, all of us who BELIEVE. (Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be SAVED).(Acts 16;31).
Take the case of the vilest sinner, who up to this moment, has been living a life of gross wickedness. Let that person receive into his heart the pure Gospel of God; let him heartily believe " that Christ died for our sins", and he, there and then, becomes a child of God, a thoroughly saved, perfectly justified and Divinely accepted person.- "He that believeth on the SON hath everlasting life" John3;36.—When does he get it? The very moment he believes. We do not get life by feeling something in ourselves, or trying to be better, but by BELIEVING SOMETHING about CHRIST. A sinner needs a simple view of the finished ATONEMENT of Christ to have the burden of his heart lifted. I must fully understand that every claim which God had upon me, a guilty sinner, has been divinely answered and eternally settled, by the precious Blood of CHRIST. This gives my soul PEACE."
George Cutting in his tract, Safety, Certainty and Enjoyment, says "YOU could never find the provision to meet YOUR case; but in the Person of His beloved SON, GOD HIMSELF provided the SACRIFICIAL LAMB, "behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" John 1 ;29. Onward to Calvary He went, as a lamb led to the slaughter and there and then He once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. lPeter3;18. He was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Rom4;25. So that God does not abate one jot of His righteous, holy claims against sin when He justifies the UNGODLY SINNER who BELIEVES in JESUS.
Blessed be God for such a SAVIOUR, such a SALVATION!"
Having brought before you these wonderful words of encouragement, I would invite you and exhort you to take the salvation offered so freely in the Gospel, by simply putting your TRUST in God's wonderful Son, because He died for sinners like you and me, at Calvary.
I, personally, accepted Christ as my SAVIOUR after hearing of His SACRIFICIAL DEATH for sinners and can now say like the apostle Paul," the son of God loved me and gave Himself for me." Gal. 2:20. The writer to the Hebrews asks the question "How shall we escape if we NEGLECT SO GREAT SALVATION " Hebs. 2;3. What will you do with this SAVIOUR, Who came all the way from Heaven, FOR YOU?
Many have used the words of an old hymn-writer—
Jesus I will TRUST Thee, trust Thee with my soul.
Guilty, lost and helpless, THOU can'st make me whole.
There is none in Heaven or on earth like THEE.
THOU hast died for sinners, therefore LORD for ME.
