... for mankind - FOR US.
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. Roms. 5;7
But GOD commendeth HIS love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners, CHRIST died for US. Roms. 5;8
Is that not an AMAZING item of news? - Not the world's, but HEAVEN'S NEWS.
If a man was righteous and really good, I don't know anybody who would die for him. Then, how unlikely is the message to our ears that for SINNERS CHRIST has died. --- Neither righteous - Nor good - but guilty SINNERS.
For me that is unbelievable. You would think God would only want to bless people who try to be good and those that keep His commandments. Of course the bible says, "There is none righteous, no not one" Roms. 3:10.
That explains why verse 6 of Romans ch. 5 says "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly".
It is very true to say the GOSPEL means "good news", and entirely UNEXPECTED good news at that. If it was not in the bible we would never believe it. But then that is the kind of PERSON GOD is - "Herein is LOVE, not that we loved GOD, but that HE loved us, and sent HIS SON to be the propitiation for our sins" 1 John 4:10.------This is Heaven's message for you and me.
Again, in Acts 13:38 we are told, "Be it known unto you, that through THIS MAN is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins. The response GOD desires and requires from us is shown in the following verse (39) "And by HIM all that BELIEVE are justified". The Gospel of John is full of it ------all we have to do is BELIEVE the gospel ----that CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS.
So the Christian's confidence is based on the word of GOD and not on any merit of his own. He has discovered what the hymn- writer wrote "I am a guilty sinner but JESUS died for me".
Was it for me, for me alone
The SAVIOUR left HIS glorious throne
The dazzling splendour of the sky,
Was it for me HE came to die?
It was for me, yes all for me
O love of GOD, so great, so free
O wondrous love, I'll shout and sing
HE died for me, my LORD, the KING..
