The Amazing Love of God
years ago in Bethlehem, a message was sent to the shepherds, “Behold
I bring you good tidings of great joy.” This
message was sent to God's earthly people, ISRAEL. And
what an unexpected message it was!
You might ask, “why was it unexpected”?
let us take a look at the behaviour of that nation, for more than
When God brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, he showered upon them blessing after blessing. But did they appreciate it? No. Time and time again, they can be seen disobeying God and ignoring His instructions.
In Numbers 21, they despised the manna; they murmured against God. And in Deut. ch.1, they rejected the report of Caleb and Joshua. God reacted to their sin with judgements, but He also showed mercy to them, and didn't forsake them.
Throughout the years of the Judges and Kings, they continued to rebel. They even went as far as worshipping idols.(Many of the Kings were very wicked men.)Often the nation was warned by God through the prophets, like Isaiah and Jeremiah, and finally they were carried away to foreign lands; the Jews were in Babylon for seventy years. The truth is that much of the Old Testament, is a catalogue of Israel's sin against God. Even so, God did not forsake them. Because of His loving-kindness, he even sent messages about future restoration. He told them that he would send a deliverer: and that it would be none other than His own dear Son. The Messiah would come and they would be blessed indeed. What a prospect! What a wonderful God is Israel's God!
Let us look again, at the words of the angel in Luke ch.2! “good tidings of great joy”, “unto you is born this day in the city of David, a SAVIOUR which is Christ the Lord”. This was the fulfilment of God's WONDERFUL promise. So when God sent His Son into the world, He was showing marvellous GRACE towards a DISOBEDIENT NATION.
In John ch.1 we read “He came unto his own”, but what was the unbelievable response? --- “His own received Him not.” It's absolutely amazing, how kind God is. - wanting only to bless His people. But how unthankful were these people! - they refused God's lovely Son. There is a parable in the gospels that says, “I will send my Son, maybe they will reverence Him.” What does such behaviour deserve? I think, that it merits the total abandonment of God.
We have been brought up hearing the wonderful stories about the Lord Jesus, and about His grace and holiness, we also know, that he was despised and rejected, and finally they sent Him to the cross. That the creature would reject the Creator is unthinkable! Surely that must be the end for Israel. Surely the next event must be the judgement of God on His disobedient people.
of God responding with judgement, He sends his servants to Jerusalem,
to tell the very murderers of His Son, that through that death of
Christ on Calvary, there is forgiveness, there is pardon. They
were to preach first, at Jerusalem, and continue with this message to
the ends of the earth -
to tell us gentiles as well. Is
this not amazing? Who would not want to hear this GOSPEL? And
so we read in John, that God loved the world so much that he gave His
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have EVERLASTING LIFE. Can
any of us fathom how gracious God is?
Many of the people in Jerusalem, believed the good news - but many still refused.
For the last 2000 years, this gospel has been preached to the whole world.. And at this very moment, the same message comes to you. What a message! - The SALVATION of GOD - Pardon for sinners. It tells us of God's matchless LOVE and what His Son has done. He suffered on the cross for us. I am reminded of the words of a lovely hymn in the gospel hymn book,
amazing, God's COMPASSION. That
so vile a worm should prove,
This stupendous bliss of Heaven, This unmeasured wealth of love.
believe that the LOVE of God is beyond words - beyond description ---
it can be demonstrated alone, by the Lord Jesus Christ taking our
place at Calvary. (AMAZING LOVE.)
I feel compelled to remind those who are not moved by love like this, that there are consequences for unbelief. The words of John ch.3 vs.36 declares that, “he that believeth not the Son shall not see life but the wrath of God abideth on him.” - The wrath of God will be a reality, to those who despise His astounding grace. (We read about it in the book of Revelation.)
But think again, of the LOVINGKINDNESS of GOD! And the extent to which he has gone, to prove HIS LOVE - the suffering Christ endured for us at Calvary. “WHO HIS own self, bare our sins in HIS own body on the tree.” 1 Peter 2 vs. 24. “He was wounded for our transgressions.” Isaiah ch. 53 vs.5.
Dear friends, we must remind you that to be careless about this message is foolishness, in the extreme; and to ignore it, is madness. The only wise thing to do, is to take the lovely Son of God as your Saviour, this very moment. To receive him, is to believe that when he died for sinners on the cross, He was there for you. You need to put your trust in Him. That is why it says in Acts 16 vs.31 “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.”
Don't just be a person who believes about him! Depend fully on Christ, that His sacrifice will save you! Trust Him as your Saviour, now!
